Geology

Fundy Trail is proud to be part of Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark, a designated area of Southern New Brunswick that is recognized for its exceptional geological heritage. Stonehammer became the first North American member of the Global Geopark’s network in 2010 and is now part of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The rock outcrops along the Fundy Trail Parkway expose both Precambrian to Cambrian rocks near the Mitchell Franklin Bridge at Big Salmon River, and Triassic age rocks along the coast to the west.

Come learn about the birth of the Atlantic Ocean. While some rock formations here are more that 500 million years old, this story is much more recent! This relatively recent geological feature story is only about 200 million years old!
